Sahuarita Intermediate School AR Reading Program Here at SIS, students read books and then are given the opportunity to take a computerized reading test in the classroom to earn points. Each quarter students set a reading goal based upon their reading level. Students who reach their AR reading goal are invited to attend a school wide AR reading celebration! Frequently Asked Questions How is my child's goal set? The AR Program automatically sets the reading goal for the child based upon their current reading level and the number of minutes the child is expected to read each day. Students with higher reading levels will then have higher reading goals. These goals can be set manually as well. Students are encouraged to double and triple their reading goals. At what times during the school day can my child take a test? TIMES to TEST! First thing in the morning from 7:34-7:45 Anytime you finish an assignment early in class. During Morning Break: Daily from 10:25-10:40 During Lunch Break: Eat lunch with Mrs. Tatum and take an AR test! After school in Mrs. Tatum's Classroom or the library ONLY! (Please make an appointment for this) Please Note: Students are not allowed to take AR reading quizzes at home! What should I do if my child is struggling to meet their AR goal? Our AR program is designed to get children excited about reading! Please help your child select books that are interesting to them! Kids who love their books tend to read more willingly! Make sure your child's book is at the appropriate reading level. Set aside a time for daily reading! I encourage my parents to read silently while their children are reading. Try creating a family reading time where every family member takes a "time out" for a good book! If your child continues to struggle, contact Mrs. Tatum by email so the goal can be adjusted accordingly. What is my child's reading Level? Each quarter students are given a STAR reading test. This is a computerized test given in the computer lab. Students are then informed of their reading range. The reading range gives the proper level for the greatest growth. We don't want children reading books that are way too easy or way too hard. The Reading Range is the best reading level for your child to achieve the greatest growth. I encourage my students to try to read books at the top of their reading range first. Students who do this tend to make the greatest reading progress. Is AR Reading a Reading Competition?
The AR Reading Program is not a reading competition where students compete against one another to achieve. Each student, based upon their reading level, has there own personal point goal. Each student should then challenge herself or himself to earn the most reading points they can. Students can also challenge themselves to beat their old personal best points achievement and so forth. Students do not compete with other students. All students who achieve their goal are invited to the school-wide reading celebration.
